Why You Should Choose a Plastic-Free Baby Bottle

It is widely known that plastic can leach chemicals into our food and drinks, which can cause serious health issues for us down the road. For example, when plastic bottles get hot, the chemicals that plastic itself is composed of, leech into the drink inside, which we then ingest. And what are many baby bottles made of? Plastic. This is concerning for a number of reasons. One being that a common component of plastic is phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors that can wreck havoc on your child's hormones. That is something we want to avoid at all costs. Chemicals like BPA have also been linked to cancers.

The bottom line is that these hazardous chemicals have no place in products that will come in contact with our children's food or bodies! If possible, choosing non-plastic baby bottles is the safest option for your baby's health. Thankfully, there are many plastic-free bottles on the market today, so you can choose a product that gives you some peace of mind. (The best non-toxic baby bottles are made from glass or 100% stainless steel)

Are Silicone Baby Bottles a Safe Option?

Silicone bottles are a safer alternative to plastic baby bottles - but there may still be potential for chemical leaching. When silicone products come in contact with fatty foods or drink, the incidence of chemical leaching increases - and both breast milk and formula contain essential fatty acids.

We actually used the Como Tomo silicone baby bottles for my daughter when I went back to work after my maternity leave. They did work very well for my breastfed baby, but in all honesty, if I had known about the silicone potentially leaching chemicals when in contact with breastmilk, I would have chosen a glass or stainless steel bottle alternative.

If you are leaning towards a silicone option, choosing a silicone bottle that is free from Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, PVC, BPS and lead will help you avoid potentially hazardous chemical leaching.
